Skill Guide: Firemaking

Firemaking is a pretty simple skill - to train and to understand. The best method to train or make use of it is by using a tinderbox on some logs, which will start a fire. Tinderboxes are available to buy at most general stores. Lighting a fire is mostly used to cook food on (by using the item on the fire)

Another important use for firemaking is for lighting candles and lanterns. These are invaluable for lighting up dark places during quests or just exploring. More on this is explained in the Lighting section further down the page.
Using a tinderbox on logs is the most effective way of training Firemaking.

The Cave Goblin Mining Helmet can be found dropped by the cave goblins under Lumbridge Castle. This item will not explode in Lumbridge Swamp Caves.

To make lanterns you will need to craft a Lantern from Molten Glass using a Glassblowing pipe. If you want to make a candle lantern then use a candle on the lantern. You could then go on to use the tinderbox on the new 'candle lantern' to light it.

Barbarian firemaking allows you to create fires without a tinderbox.

To begin learning Barbarian Skills you must speak to Otto who is located in Otto's Grotto south west of Barbarian Assault. He will teach you how to use a bow (shortbow, longbow) to light a fire.

He can also teach you many other barbarian techniques in other skills.
