Woodcutting is a very useful skill in the game. It's a good money maker and is a fundamental part of the Fletching and Firemaking skills.

It's a very easy skill to learn and train. Just grab a hatchet and 'chop down' trees. The higher the woodcutting level, the better hatchets and ability to cut down bigger trees. If it's XP that you're after then it's best to stick with cutting down Maple Logs beyond that level.

Yew and Magic logs are a good and simple source of money.

Machetes:

Machetes are used to cut through jungle. There are no level restrictions on the machetes themselves but there are required levels to cut through different types of jungle.

Light jungle = Level 10 Woodcutting
Medium jungle = Level 20 Woodcutting
Dense jungle = Level 35 Woodcutting

Every so often when you are woodcutting you will find a birds nest on the ground that has fallen out of the tree. Pick up the nest and search it. You may find tree seeds, jewelry or any other random items. You may also find a summoning egg which can be hatched with an incubator. You will need 70 summoning to do this.

There was a lot of confusion when eggs were first found in birds nests as to what they were for because the summoning skill had not yet been released.
